  1. MJOLNIR - Just A Boy CONT014

    March 17, 2014 - by labeladmin

    image

As the saying goes, it’s not where you’re from but where you’re at, as Continental’s painstakingly been demonstrating these last two years putting out singles from like-minded musicians across the globe (London, Paris, Sydney, Osaka, Toronto, Ghent, Zurich etc). This time, for its 14th release, Jerry Bouthier’s imprint is jetting off to Jakarta, Indonesia, to hook up with local electrodisco heroes: Mjolnir. Spell M-J-O-L-N-I-R, which means the hammer of Thor, heard as thunder by humans!

Inspired by European synth pop, Mjolnir, the brainchild of Nara Anindyaguna and Catra Adhiwardana, dub their sound ‘dark disco funk’. The pair’s been getting steady, growing love from the best blogs out there thanks to winning melodies, skilled musicianship and a fresh - not so quite easy to pigeon-hole - approach that’s seen them remix The Chemical Brothers,Chromeo and more.

The EP contains four brand new reinterpretations taking the gorgeous ‘Just A Boy’ to new heights. JBAG aka Continental bosses Jerry Bouthier and Andrea Gorgerino could not resist giving it a glam make-over that’s both nostalgic and uplifting at the same time. Fresh from their debut “Bombay Night Story”, Continental’s last release, Switzerland’s Mannequinedeliver an ambitious re-rub that climaxes with housey pianos. Next, Vancouver-based rising producer Pat Lok gets rough and funky without losing the soulful gist of the original composition. Finally Helsinki’s Castletics combines robodisco groove and timeless euro flavours.

  2. MANNEQUINE & JAS CREW - Bombay Night Story CONT013

    December 9, 2013 - by labeladmin

    image

For its 13th release Jerry Bouthier’s label Continental records is off to Zurich for an invigorating slice of tropical hip-pop, the perfect follow-up to JBAG’s summery anthem ‘Mogadisco’.

Introducing Mannequine, the duo comprising of gifted songwriter Claudio Salvia and versatile dj Ruben Cassiano also behind their Swiss hometown’s best club night. After kicking off their collaboration with bootlegs and edits, the pair soon moved onto producing tentalizing tunes, high on tasteful melodies and rich arrangements, naturally fusing funk, house, nu-disco, indie, r’n’b, beats… in one inspired spell that’s got a definite 2013 stamp to it.

Soon several remixes followed, including their impeccable dramadisco reinterpretation of Kill The Hero ftMaggie K de Monde ‘Surrender’ (the 3rd Continental release where they were running against fierce competition with remixes from the likes of Shazam, Play Paul/Tulip, Reflex, Lancelot…) and soon enough Mannequine got working on their debut release, a voluptuous invitation not short of vibey keys, bouncy beats and exotic fragrance.

Enter local rappers Jas Crew, three MCs who between them combine five nations united under one name. These Swiss, with only one thing on their mind: music, as a whole in all its various forms and facets, have let their magic operate over Mannequine’s track and provided a fresh and infectious song. ‘Bombay Night Story’ was born, with a chorus catchier than chickenpox, this tale about a night out with loved ones offers a good piece of advice: it’s alright giving it all but make sure not to go overboard.

Take your pick between the original mixes: the glorious full-vocal, the none the less attractive and elegantly epic instrumental and Jerry Bouthier’s own dub edit which sits comfortably between the two (ie: the instrumental + some vocals).

Lastly Shindu – Continental’s Belgian protégés - provide an astute, more introspective take that relies heavily on a deeper than deep bassline.

  3. JBAG - Mogadisco CONT012

    September 24, 2013 - by labeladmin

    image

Riding the wave shaped these last 18 months by their Continental imprint and a flock of standout releases (singles by Reflex, RÜFÜS, Shindu, Cyclist, Adamski…) JBAG aka Jerry Bouthier and Andrea Gorgerino have unleashed their tropical gem ‘Mogadisco’ on September 23rd.

The ace video designed and directed by Brazil’s Caio Zini has been posted all summer on some of the best blogs out there after the track was included on Kitsuné Soleil 2, Bouthier’s last dj mix in collaboration with soulmate-dj Gildas Loaec - boss of the renowned Parisian brand. Causing a bit of a steer ‘Mogadisco’ is Kitsuné Soleil 2’s biggest single download seller.

    Watch the video here: http://bit.ly/1cGAjMF

After a long stretch of remixes for the likes of Two Door Cinema Club, Ladyhawke, S-Express, Gigamesh, Punks Jump Up, Kamp!, Jupiter… the London-based DJs/producers have completed their second single and what a party starter it is. Filled with exotic marimbas, carnival steel-drums and an infectious ‘Pop-Corn’-flavoured synth lead, ‘Mogadisco’ is an exhilarating yet almost spiritual ode to hedonism that implores you to loosen up and enjoy the moment.

Bouthier’s experience at rocking dancefloors with personal and inspired sets, always looking for exciting new artists whilst also digging the past (he was resident dj of east London’s infamous BoomBox), has made him a reliable, trustworthy spinner regularly linked to Kitsuné; not forgetting his long-running relationships with designer Vivienne Westwood and others, crafting esoteric soundtracks for the catwalk as well as providing fun at fashion week parties. On the other hand Italian ex-pat Gorgerino’s musical pedigree is impressive, the classically trained musician turned skilled producer is as comfortable penning profound ear-catching melodies as he is riding the mixing desk with fervour. The pair like to think they make Balearic pop incorporating their many influences. JBAG is now starting to perform together live dj sets with keyboard and FX.

On the remix front Milan’s Fare Soldi provide one of their trademark funky chuggers just on the right side of sanity. Berlin’s Pharaoh Black Magic goes all mystic and elegiac while keeping the pumping factor high. Last, Athens’ latest prodigal son ELIOT delivers a deliciously 90s rewrite that’s actually not that tongue-in-cheek.

With the support from Two Door Cinema Club, The Magician, Bag Raiders, Plastic Plates, Punks Jump Up, Anoraak, Jupiter, Alex Metric, Acid Washed, Tronik Youth, Jeremy Glenn…

  4. CYCLIST ft. MAIKO WATSON - Shine CONT011

    July 31, 2013 - by labeladmin

    image

For its 11th release, Continental is feeling soulful by hooking up with Canada’s Cyclist who delivers torrid new single ‘Shine’ featuring Maiko Watson on vocals.

New Torontonian-via-Vancouver-via-Winnipeg, Mark ‘Cyclist’ Penner has been a fixture in Canada's live funk scene for years as part of  impressive live dance outfit Moses Mayes. Enamoured with the post-disco, electronic paths dance music took in the early 80s - electro funk, proto-house etc - it was only a matter of time before Penner would catch the dancefloor bug and turn his ample production skills and musicianship to his solo project Cyclist.

With internationally acclaimed releases on Homebreakin’ and Punchout! not mentioning an array of remixes – including his rendition (with buddy Pat Lok) of The Rapture’s “How Deep is Your Love” (voted winner of a DFA remix competition by the band itself and an inspired indie-dance take on Shindu ‘Just Go’ for Continental) - Cyclist is soon growing into an important producer. His impeccable references by no means tying him up to models but on the contrary inspiring him to continuously push things further.

‘Shine’ sweats and drips like a block party jam on a hot New York day, D-Train and Tom Tom Club lost on the Paradise Garage’s dancefloor… Phat chunky beats, swirling skippy keyboards and guest singer/songwriter Maiko Watson (also Canadian, with an enviable solo career) belts out her gut-wrenching delivery with as much conviction as yesterday’s legends Gwen Guithrie or Chaka Khan. Yes ‘Shine’ is electronic soul that rocks.

Remix-wise, an imposing cast has got down to business with this little gem of a song. One of Sweden’s finest exports Drop Out Orchestra plug the vocoder and stay faithful to the original while opting for a more big room angle. Next, relying on his trademark  spaced-out synths, live bass and perc, New York’s far-out groover Lou Teti lets wild on the pitchbend and expertly dubs things out. Completing the package, Chicago’s Rogue Vogue gives ‘Shine’ a rugged, jackin’ house make-over complete with tasty pianos. Beware this could be the release’s dark horse.

With the support from Moullinex, RAC, U-Tern, In Flagranti, The C90s, Anoraak, Jeremy Glenn, Cosmo Baker, Debonair, Marcus Marr, Al Kent, Fingerman, Alkalino…

  5. REFLEX - Together (Remix!) CONT010

    July 15, 2013 - by labeladmin

    image

Following the release of Reflex ‘Together’, here is now the Remix! package of this standout anthem released July 15th on Continental records – Jerry Bouthier’s label with JBAG partner Andrea Gorgerino.

Reflex is the unstoppable couple, based in the south of France near Montpellier, who erupted on the scene early 2012 with debut single ‘Wavering’ (and its ecstatic JBAG remix), a song one can only cherish fondly, just like priceless memories. Indie-dance? Electro-rock? Discopop? Who cares? You can hear influences, conscious or not, Chilly Gonzales, Italians Do It Better, Aeroplane, the synth pop classics and more… yet Reflex’s music claims nothing more than spreading balearic love for the soul… and the bodies on the dancefloor.

Yet Lud & André aren’t about reviving the 70s nor the 80s. If anything the past decades inspire them to be challenging, show that electronic music can still be exciting by offering people songs and emotions that aren’t simply formulaic. Ultimately their desired Mediterranean lifestyle, the sun, the sea… have only but galvanized their inspiration. The pair can’t get away from the studio, writing and remixing non-stop (they’ve lately given the Reflex touch to Black Strobe, Juveniles, Continental’s Shindu and Kill The Hero…). Always on the move, gigging or deejaying in clubs and festivals alike, they’ve just completed a 10 dates US tour which included SXSW, L.A., Vegas… and culminated in Hawaii.

As a result of all those late night outs, Reflex have decided to hit the dancefloor hard for their second single. ‘Together’ is gospel music according to The Haçienda’s evangelism – big piano breakdowns, hands-in-the-air, sweaty smiles abound… and the lead vocal celebrating the night away and beautiful newfound friendships. Dare we say housey? Oui, but à la Mancunian with a French twist please.

‘Together (Remix!)’ the second EP comes with four new exciting reinterpretations. First on the bill needing no introduction are Punks Jump Up who deliver one of their trademark dancefloor-slayers. Joe and Dave have got the TR 808 and 909 out for a deep yet muscular re-rub that will please the big room jocks out there. Second is Oxford, Continental’s latest protégé who might as well be dubbed mr vibey for turning out such gorgeous reworks (check his remix of Shindu ‘Just Go’ on Continental last year or his fab take on Goldroom ft Cheetah ‘Fifteen’). More to come soon from this stylish Gallic disco dude… Next is another solitary producer, the one and only Tronik Youth who - never scared of challenges and pushing the envelope further - takes a chuggy almost US house turn complete with quirky Steve Silk Hurley saxophones. Last but not least San Diego’s Colour Vision – a name to watch - delivers a truly yummy mix to be sipped by the pool, ideal for late night partying during tropical heatwaves.

Go on treat yourself and your audience, pick your fave ‘Together’ remix and watch those smiles on the floor. Summers were designed for such tunes…

With support from The Magician, Yuksek, The Glimmers, Lifelike, Mighty Mouse, Mark Moore/S-Express, Acid Washed, Pharaoh Black Magic, Jay Lamar et Jesse Oliver…

French duo Reflex is back for its second single the thunderous Together!

The single comes in four versions, the glorious original and 3 remixes from a solid international cast. First in line is Vancouver’s Pat Lok who gets the tech stabs out without losing any of the fluo groove. Next come Japan’s finest Boys Get Hurt who slow things down, bringing additional developments whilst remaining grand and epic. Last but not least Zurich dj on the rise Ryan Riot expressively takes the song into the euro zone.

  7. FANCY - 69 CONT008

    June 24, 2013 - by labeladmin

    image

For its 8th release, Continental is proud to announce the new single from funky glam-rockers Fancy. Famed for its tight live performances and its androgynous frontman the Parisian band - comprising of Jessie Chaton (vox & keyboards), Mom (guitar) , Rae Mone (bass) and their drummer Antoine - has an album and several singles under its belt (including ‘All Night Long’ on Vitalic’s label). Blessed with an ear for killer choruses, Jessie is an uncanny French singer/songwriter struck by celestial inspiration (he is also bass player in the funky-pop Americano-French band General Elektriks and has co-written Justice’s ‘D.A.N.C.E’ and Rinocérôse’s ‘Bitch’).

If ‘69’ owes a thing or two to his Purple highness, it’s also a furiously modern pop tune effortlessly fusing sticky guitar licks and vintage synths in one steamy outburst that commands you to break into funky pogo. As always the package boasts the original and a handful of remixes aimed at djs. Continental’s own JBAG slow the pace down but not the jump-up factor for an irresistible disco-rock extravaganza. New kid on the blogs Jean Tonique does his funky French indie thing and gives the song a blue-eyed soul coating. Finally, Parisian rockers Gush – 2 brothers and 2 cousins – take a starker, almost leftfield approach that gives the song yet another axis.
So Fancy ‘69’, lust and sleaze all around? Or fusional love’s playful eulogy?

    '69' was released May 6th 2013

  8. SHINDU - Just Go (REMIX) CONT007

    February 4, 2013 - by labeladmin

    image

A few weeks after the release of ‘Just Go’, the new single from Belgian discopopduo Shindu, comes the remix package.

After erupting with a spot-on cover of Siouxsie & The Banshees ‘Happy House’ on Kitsuné, Chibi and Christopher have proved here they can pen and produce great songs of their own. ‘Just Go’ is a perfectly formed entity, throwing drama on the dancefloor to the sound of mesmerizing sequences, sensual robodisco that works as much at home than in the clubs. The remixes sail towards different shores without ever losing sight of the original song.

First Continental’s in-house duo from down south Reflex deliver one of their best works to date. After a dozen of remixes Ludmila et André are unstoppable and have really done their homework turning out a glam peaktime anthem that’s all glorious electric stabs and carefree summery vibes. Watch for their second single soon on Continental…

Next are Poland’s finest Kamp!, remember their fabulous ‘Cairo’ last year? The impressive electro-pop-rock trio pitches the vocal down for a winning housed-up rendition, complete with pianos and filtered breakdowns, that’s as mystifying than it is efficient on the dancefloor.

Talking of which, Paris-based Plaisir de France – once known as Sweet Light – delivers a restless cut-up dub that loops and loops, think My Bloody Valentine vs Todd Terry. Edited to maximum effect by Continental’s Jerry Bouthier, this sexy hypnotic groover punctuated by rollercoaster builds and drops is this release’s free download.

New French talent Oxford rounds off an eventful package with a gorgeous re-rub that hits the nostalgic spot without losing the beat. Blue-eyed soul mood à la Phoenix/Zoot Woman combined to Ghent’s electrodisco zing forms a marriage celebrated in heaven.

  9. SHINDU - Just Go CONT006

    January 24, 2013 - by labeladmin

    image

It’s summer 2011 in Ghent, the legendary Belgian town that spawned 2 Many DJs, Eskimo, The Glimmers…when a boy dj and a girl singer collide to create Shindu, a duo all about fun and passion for pop/electronic music. Flemings Chibi and Christopher explode on the scene with their debut single 'Happy House' on Kitsuné, an astute rendition of the Siouxsie & The Banshees hit, produced with Moonlight Matters.

Shindu quickly becomes recognised as a new and refreshing synthpop sensation and the duo soon dreams up stories of conquering the global dancefloors. They’ve been described as club, indie and disco, yet it’s fair to say they’re a bit of all that and more. Their main ambition? Getting better and better at writing fab songs. As it goes, their third single - their debut on Jerry Bouthier’s Continental records - sees the pair make a huge leap from keen hipsters covering good stuff to talented songwriters.

This release presents Shindu’s original mix in all its glory, featured by ATTAR! in his latest mixtape, and a stripped down dub edited by Jerry Bouthier for those djs who like a lil less vocals. Canada’s Cyclist completes the package by providing a deep and laidback reinterpretation that’s ideal for late sets. More hot remixes to follow…

Just Go was released on November 4th 2012
