Eternally enamoured with the sun-drenched Aussie scene, most probably because of the British-French musical heritage it often bears, it’s with excitement I landed and set base in Sydney for two weeks on the occasion of Kitsuné’s first ever Down Under tour.
Six parties to celebrate the release of Kitsuné Soleil 2 - my new cd mix in collaboration with sir Gildas, which took me all over the country for some fully kitted Kitsuné Club Nights including many local artists and friends of the label.
It started off in a Melbourne dingy basement rammed with indie students, where I met the glowing Chela a determined character who won’t leave you cold. Unfortunately she got diagnosed with salmonela the next day and had to spend the week in hospital cancelling two dates on the tour. Shame as her semi-live act with guitarist provided a substantial addition to the party.
Had the good fortune to meet another larger-than-life individual, The Swiss’ Luke Million who performed animated live dj sets with keyboard and talk box on two dates. A true one-man orchestra possessed by the boogie demon, he’s also a gentleman with hand on heart. Not unlike the unique Shazam (aka Cameron Parkin) who too joined the bill in Perth, with fingers in many pies, the 23-year-old prodigy is still fluttering from one project to the next… As long as he keeps on offering us those magical chords he’s got us addicted to, we aren’t fussy!
Then it was off to Goldcoast for the world famous Elsewhere which truly deserves its reputation, the party went off big time and I ended up deejaying almost 3 hours despite being jet-lag sick (and mothered by tour co-organiser Jon). Good vibes all around, resident djs Audun, Giv and Stretch run their club with love and affection, and it shows.
Back in Sydney I was asked to visit this community project which puts gifted kids in the studio with professionals. So I spent one afternoon doing a track with Tasha, a 16-year-old girl who sings like a hurt angel and could practically play guitar in The XX. I was hypnotized, and in a few takes monitored by Adam Pablo Calamary, the pair wrote a proper tune - complete with rap from a classmate MC - over a 116 BPM beat lifted off JBAG’s remix of RÜFÜS ‘This Moment’.
Talking about RÜFÜS, the trio was deejaying before me on the tour’s Sydney date (as well as party starters Softwar) and delivered their inspired take on the deep-house evangelism which is currently sweeping Australia. The day before I played a few records at the private party, the band had for the release of its debut album ‘Atlas’. This unstoppable indie-electro band could simply go stellar, they’ve got the tunes and the right attitude.
Club Feet is another indie electro band which has two of its members, the brazen and friendly Julian & Ben, turn into US-flavoured house djs at the weekend covering the whole of the land back and forth.
In Perth the party ended up in the club’s toilets with local dj figure Manimal and tour co-organiser Josh who certainly knows a good party when he sees one. In Brisbane I got to meet the interesting and friendly Bowler Bar crowd and Mitzi’s Jad Lee (also on the bill under his Jad & The Ladyboy dj alias) which made me feel at home like in east London, only on the other side of the planet. Talk about universal language.

Riding the wave shaped these last 18 months by their Continental imprint and a flock of standout releases (singles by Reflex, RÜFÜS, Shindu, Cyclist, Adamski…) JBAG aka Jerry Bouthier and Andrea Gorgerino are finally unleashing their tropical gem ‘Mogadisco’ on September 23rd.
The ace video designed and directed by Brazil’s Caio Zini has been posted all summer on some of the best blogs out there after the track was included on Kitsuné Soleil 2, Bouthier’s last dj mix in collaboration with soulmate-dj Gildas Loaec - boss of the renowned Parisian brand. Causing a bit of a steer ‘Mogadisco’ is Kitsuné Soleil 2’s biggest single download seller.

After a long stretch of remixes for the likes of Two Door Cinema Club, Ladyhawke, S-Express, Gigamesh, Punks Jump Up, Kamp!, Jupiter… the London-based DJs/producers have completed their second single and what a party starter it is. Filled with exotic marimbas, carnival steel-drums and an infectious ‘Pop-Corn’-flavoured synth lead, ‘Mogadisco’ is an exhilarating yet almost spiritual ode to hedonism that implores you to loosen up and enjoy the moment.
Bouthier’s experience at rocking dancefloors with personal and inspired sets, always looking for exciting new artists whilst also digging the past (he was resident dj of east London’s infamous BoomBox), has made him a reliable, trustworthy spinner regularly linked to Kitsuné; not forgetting his long-running relationships with designer Vivienne Westwood and others, crafting esoteric soundtracks for the catwalk as well as providing fun at fashion week parties. On the other hand Italian ex-pat Gorgerino’s musical pedigree is impressive, the classically trained musician turned skilled producer is as comfortable penning profound ear-catching melodies as he is riding the mixing desk with fervour. The pair like to think they make Balearic pop incorporating their many influences. JBAG is now starting to perform together live dj sets with keyboard and FX.
On the remix front Milan’s Fare Soldi provide one of their trademark funky chuggers just on the right side of sanity. Berlin’s Pharaoh Black Magic goes all mystic and elegiac while keeping the pumping factor high. Last, Athens’ latest prodigal son ELIOT delivers a deliciously 90s rewrite that’s actually not that tongue-in-cheek.
With the support from Two Door Cinema Club, The Magician, Bag Raiders, Plastic Plates, Punks Jump Up, Anoraak, Jupiter, Alex Metric, Acid Washed, Tronik Youth, Jeremy Glenn…
